Little did we know what March of 2020 had in store for us. News of this new deadly virus was spreading, but it really hit home when the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo closed down. It was spring break for local schools and students and staff were informed that they would not be returning at the end of the week. LCUMC, as well as the rest of the community hoped it would be a couple of weeks of laying low, and then life would return to normal.
Weeks stretched into months. LCUMC went all in with launching online worship and livestreaming services and setting up Zoom meetings for ministry teams and sunday school classes. It was a big leap in technology education for your congregation.
It wasn't all negative. Congregants helped support each other. Members did grocery shopping for less medically sturdy members. Sunday School leaders organized online groups. Our Food Truck Ministry was the only local food reachout that was never disrupted during the entire pandemic. The leaders of this ministry pivoted and re-designed the distribution system, to keep volunteers and our neighbors safe. These changes made the system more efficient and is still in use today. We have also continued to live-stream our services every sunday.
Twenty percent of our churches have left the denomination, but those who remain get to write the story accompanying this new headline. Where will we invest our gifts through the Church to benefit a shared future? What new or renewed ministry will we become known for? How will this ministry help to clarify and amplify the identity of The United Methodist Church in our communities?
Our answers to these questions and others like them will shape our shared story for years to come. But whatever we do, let’s commit to making a real difference in people’s lives.
May God inspire us to selflessly and boldly invest in a future that benefits all of God’s children.
